Why would you want to remove your radiator from your motorcycle?

Removing your radiator and fan sheds unnecessary weight from your motorcycle. This is only recommended for high-performance drag racing applications.  We do NOT recommend it for bracket racers. The water pump moves hot water out of the block to the radiator. The radiator’s job is to remove the heat from the water and pass it into the air stream. During a drag race, with short bursts at full throttle power, the heat exchanger (radiator) won’t be able to keep up, rendering it useless.

What is a Motorcycle Water Pump Block Off?

A motorcycle water pump block off is a modification made to a motorcycle’s cooling system. In a typical motorcycle cooling system, a water pump circulates coolant through the engine and radiator to dissipate heat and maintain an optimal operating temperature. However, some motorcycle enthusiasts and mechanics choose to eliminate or “block off” the water pump for various reasons.

The primary reason for blocking off the water pump is to convert the motorcycle from a liquid-cooled system to an air-cooled system. As the name suggests, air-cooled motorcycles rely solely on air for engine cooling, and they lack a water-cooling system with a water pump. By blocking off the water pump, the coolant is no longer circulated, and the engine will rely solely on airflow to manage the heat generated during operation.

Motorcycle water pump block off is often done for performance reasons, simplicity, or aesthetics. Air-cooled engines may be preferred for their simplicity and lighter weight. Some riders believe that air-cooled engines offer a more classic or vintage look, as many older motorcycles used air-cooling.

However, it’s essential to note that removing the water pump and converting a liquid-cooled motorcycle to an air-cooled one is not a simple modification and should not be taken lightly. Proper cooling is crucial for an engine’s longevity and performance, especially if you frequently ride in hot conditions or engage in heavy use. Without the water cooling system, the engine may be more prone to overheating, potentially leading to engine damage or decreased performance.
